7th grade begins with a map skills unit then a unit on the 5 themes of Geography. Next we study three Asian countries, our trade partners, India, Japan and China. The Asian country segment of the class ends at winter break. The rest of the course is Pacific Northwest Studies, highlighting Washington State history and themes. Students explore a variety of themes including mapping, geography, geology, history, economics and Native Americans of the Pacific Northwest. This part of the course is a requirement for high school graduation in Washington State.
We start out the year with a review of the 5 Themes of Geography. Then we study the 13 original English colonies in America, the American Revolution, the Constitution, Westward Expansion, Slavery and Reform and finally the American Civil War. After studying the Constitution we write a research paper on Individual Rights vs the Common Good for our state mandated Classroom Based Assessment.
